Using the Ferry Hints and Advice
If you intend using your hire van or mini bus in Europe, you'll first need to get permission from your van hire company. Some van hire companies don't allow travel outside the UK. You'll also be required to pay extra for European insurance and breakdown cover.
It's a good idea to make a note of shipping dimensions (in metres) of the vehicle you've hired – height, length and width – as this is required by most ferry companies.
In deciding which ferry company to use, calculate the total cost of the trip and the time it will take you to reach your destination. Remember to include the cost of toll roads. Many of Europe's motorways have toll charges and in France these are fairly expensive.
Estimate fuel costs and the number of days your journey will take and remember to include the cost of overnight accommodation for you and your passengers.
If you need help, you can always Google for a European Route Planner.
There are many ferry companies to choose from, so it's advisable to get quotes for each of the possible ferry crossings. If you'd like to search online, try www.ferrysavers.com
